|What miracle does Jesus want to work for you?|
There is a single chapter in the Gospel of John that offers clear insight to this question: John 6. I will tell you a little about this chapter so you will be inclined to read it for yourself. It is a long chapter but, if you follow the story to the end, you can see clearly what Jesus wants to do for you and for all of us. You need to read John 6, thoughtfully.
John 6 is a chapter of miracles: Blessing people with miracles of healing (v. 2), Feeding 5,000 with few loaves and fishes (v. 10-14), Amazing people by walking on water (v. 18-21). Still, the people wanted more signs (v. 30). Can we see ourselves in this picture? We wonder what Jesus will do for us. We are waiting for His blessing, His miracle! Yes, we believe and want to follow Him for greater benefits.
When you read John 6 you will see that Jesus is not pleased with these people – at least not in their present condition. He tries to change their thinking. He wants to help them see what is really important, what His work is really all about! It is with disdain that Jesus says: “You seek me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled (v.27).” They saw the miracle but the miracle was not the point. What is the point? “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you…” (27).
The people following Jesus wanted Him to heal, provide materially, amaze them with power over physical obstacles. Jesus, however, wanted to give them everlasting life (v. 27, 40, 47, 51, 54) and raise them up in the last day (v. 39, 40, 54). Jesus did not intend to give them the material blessings. All those miracles were tools, teaching spiritual truth, wasted on worldly minded people. Jesus challenged them to think beyond this life to what really matters (v. 32-51). They were not interested and, in the end, stopped following Him (v. 60-66). They rejected Jesus.
“Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life'” (John 6:67-68).
What miracle do you wish Jesus would do for you? Jesus wants to do what’s best for you. Jesus wants to bless and lift you up. What you need more than anything is the bread of life, the words of Jesus, eternal life, to be raised up in the last day. That is the miracle Jesus wants to work for you. True disciples understand and follow the Lord for the eternal life He offers.
